We have just come back from China. We had an intense trip and development is going full steam ahead!
During the trip, there was one BIG question that popped up. So as always we need to talk to you people!
We need to confirm what screen + stylus combo we will use in our device.
Let me explain how they are related. Right now we are considering 2 options for our active stylus Wacom EMR or USI (Universal Stylus Initiative) solution that uses Ntrig's technology.
Why we are not considering Wacom AES?
Wacom AES is taking longer than Wacom has planned and as a result if we want to use AES gen 12 pens (that is same or worse performance than SP4) we would have to postpone our production until February at least. For Wacom AES gen 13 we would need to wait at least till fall next year. The reason for that is that Wacom is a massive "old-fashioned" company that is quite slow at implementing their technology. Also according to rumours Wacom AES gen 13 will be part of USI so in essence we potentially would support their pens once they hit the market
Why this poll is about Screen and Pen and how they are related?
It might seem confusing at first but not all of the LCD panels support EMR solution as EMR requires a special magnetic back panel that has to be placed either inside the LCD module or behind it. As Eve community previously has decided (previous thread here)that Pyramid Flipper has to have a 12-inch panel with 3:2 aspect ratio and exceptional picture quality and natural colour reproduction we have found 2 beautiful LCDs that would be just that! One of them supports EMR another doesn't as it has a metal frame that would block magnetic back panel. This is getting a bit too complex for this poll
So let's begin with LCD. We have 2 options:
- 2736x1824 12.3 inch 267 ppi IGZO LCD panel with 1:1400 contrast ratio
- 2160x1440 12.0 inch 216 ppi LCD panel with 1:800 contrast ratio
Now a little bit about both panels
If we were to choose from 2 screens alone the first screen would be a clear winner as it has better resolution, noticeably better colours thanks to IGZO technology and exceptional contrast ratio as well as it is a bit cheaper.
As for the second panel, well you can see the specs above and compare it to the first one
We especially like 1st panel because of IGZO technology which basically makes the display more power efficient and allows to have more vivid colours. You can read about IGZO here
Now about stylus technology we could use
So right now we are down to 2 options.
Wacom EMR 4096 pressure level pen that also supports tilt and has no lag due to its technology
Ntrig based solution based on USI (Universal Stylus Initiative), that would be similar to AES and support Microsoft Pro 3 & 4 pens, as well as other pens, developed under USI. And right according to rumors Wacom AES gen 13 pen would also fall under USI which essentially means that our device would be able to use it once it becomes available (It is not yet official as it is new standard and things take time to settle down) You can read more about the initiative here and here
So how would the second solution work? Well, it is a chip in the touch panel that supports both touch and an active stylus. In contrast to EMR that requires a lot of customization and tunning this chip is designed to work with different pens. Overall this initiative was created to provide good pen experience on different devices as well as to provide more pens to choose from for end users.
If we the second path than at first we will have a pen with identical performance to SP4 pen.
To sum it up, we can either use a great screen and a good pen (SP4) with potential to more pens (such as Wacom AES gen 13) over time OR good screen and Wacom EMR
Let's have a look at the pros and cons of both options
12.3 inch 2736x1824 IGZO screen and Ntrig based pen with 1024 pressure levels and compatibility with Surface pro 4 & 3 pens (Yes you can buy SP4 pen and use it with PF )
- Overall solution will be around 100 USD cheaper for the end user:fire:
- Compatibility with Microsoft Surface Pens
- Long term possibility to choose from a wide array of pens such as Wacom AES gen 13
- Gorgeous IGZO screen providing better colours and battery life as well as pixels per inch
- Pen standard is still immature and can take longer to develop as result companies like Wacom with AES gen 13 might take longer to deploy their solutions.
- Lower pen performance
12.0 inch 2160x1440 LCD panel with Wacom EMR pen that supports 4096 levels of pressure has almost no latency and supports 60-degree tilt
- EMR is Wacom's strength and as a result pen and it specs is substantially better while a normal user might not really notice the difference.
- Pen performance would be as close as you can get to iPadPro
- Extra 100 USD to end user price (very hard and expensive to implement comparing to touch panel chip)
- Long term USI could evolve as a better technology and deliver better performance
So here comes the poll guys! Your help is very much needed here after we make this important choice we will be able to continue making Pyramid Flipper the best device out there!
What screen + stylus combo should we go with? Please remember there is 100USD difference between 2 options
