There probably is. The topic that is very dear to me is the position of the HOME/END buttons, as I believe it's not a good idea to put them with the arrows. With those buttons separated from the arrows... there may not be enough space.
It might be my fault, but I can only find the post where you describe the use with your TV, mentioning its remote to control the volume.
Still, the traveller use-case you mentioned is definitely valid and in such case, an additional keyboard is certainly not feasible. As basically all vendors use the F[n] keys to host volume and media buttons, I don't believe they can be moved or changed at this point.
How about the brightness? I remember, many years ago, a friend of mine had a laptop where the brightness control was on the arrow keys. This would leave hope for my request to be satisfied, as if you put the brightness control on the arrows there is room on the F[n] keys for the HOME/END/PGUP/PGDOWN keys on the F[n] line.
Extending the issue a bit, there's still the problem with the INSERT key, as well as PRTSCR for some or SCROLL LOCK for some others. And let's not forget a very convenient combination for business use: the combination to switch from internal to external monitor. There might be a need to use all CTRL, ALT, SHIFT and TAB buttons after all...
Also, what do people think of the idea of allowing the FN to become sticky by pressing FN+ESC, as Dell does?
