Since this thread blew up a little (without me noticing early enough, sorry about that!)
So, first of all I don't know where the information comes from that we'll offer a RAM increase in the i5 model "if there will be the numbers" but to my knowledge it won't be happening in the near future. (I think the quote was in terms of the production numbers for the V and not people wanting a 16GB RAM)
Mike said it pretty nicely in another thread asking for 16GB RAM:
We're working very hard to offer the most requested models, but every model increases the complexity in manufacturing and increases the chance that something will go wrong. This is why we'll be sticking to 3 models for now but we'll look into expanding the lineup with more models later down the line.
Personal opinion following
In my personal opinion (now come my 2 cents) there'll be another problem - if we start offering a 16GB i5 right now it's fine, but what SSD size would we put in? 256? 512? I think we'd have quite a bunch of people that would want either one of those, so we'd likely have to make 2 models - one i5 16GB with a 256 SSD and one with a 512 SSD. Ok, let's make them, 5 models now.
Well, now we're all happy, aren't we? But what with people that are fine with 8GB and an i5 but want a 512GB SSD? Ok, another model 6 models now.
It's basically like opening a pandoras box - as @Mike said before and I quoted him for that, it's near impossible to offer the perfect model for everyone, just because it's freaking complex and also I think more models make it much harder to choose from.
Do I take the i5 / 16GB / 256GB model or pay 300$ extra for the 512GB SSD?
But then I could also upgrade to the i7 for 500$ extra! But do I even need the 16GB?
I could maybe just stick with the i5/8GB/256!
For now (speaking: before we have a higher volume for the V) I think having those 3 distinct models is fine, once we have a higher volume & everything running properly (aka V's being delivered to the people, the LTE model being delivered, eGPU being finished up) expanding the number of different models would be cool
