The software inside the hardware
Firmware is a specific class of computer software that provides low-level control for the device’s specific hardware. Unlike device drivers which are stored on your system drive, firmware is stored as part of the device it controls. Though it rarely needs to be updated, firmware updates can improve system security, performance, or stability, and can in some cases even add new functionality.
Because firmware updates are written to non-volatile storage inside the components, there is a certain risk involved when installing them. If the update is interrupted, the component or your entire V may not function properly — and unlike other software issues, re-installing Windows will not fix this. Therefore you should always make sure your device has a full battery charge or is powered from the wall. We also recommend to only install firmware updates if you are experiencing issues with the affected component. Installing firmware updates is always done at your own risk!

Updates for increased security
Spectre and Meltdown are software exploits in Intel- and other processors that prey on technologies designed to speed up computers. To protect your V from these and other security vulnerabilities, make sure Windows is up to date and that your system BIOS is updated to firmware version 0.41 or newer. All users are recommended to install this update.
Updates for enhanced features
- Battery EC
A firmware update is available for the battery’s embedded controller chip, that increases the speed at which the internal battery of the V charges. This update is optional and is not required for the V to function properly.
Updates for improved compatibility
- Thunderbolt 3
If you encounter issues when connecting external Thunderbolt 3 devices, a firmware update for the Thunderbolt 3 controller is available. This update is only required if you are experiencing issues with a connected Thunderbolt 3 device.
Updates with usability tweaks
- Keyboard & Touchpad
Generally, the latest available update is the best choice to install. That said, updates to the keyboard/touchpad firmware may include tweaks to sensitivity based on user feedback. If you feel that your touchpad is not as responsive to your fingers after installing the latest update, you may wish to try an older version of these drivers to test if their sensitivity settings better suit your needs. This update is only required if you are experiencing issues with your keyboard or touchpad.
- Touch Panel
Generally, the latest available update is the best choice to install. That said, updates to the touch panel firmware may include tweaks to sensitivity based on user feedback. If you feel that your touch panel is not as responsive to your fingers after installing the latest update, you may wish to try an older version of these drivers to test if their sensitivity settings better suit your needs. This update is only required if you are experiencing issues with your touch panel.
