Yes, I agree that the initial poll has already given what it could give: a general list of most wanted (used?) fn functions. The discussion, instead, has almost immediately focused on very practical and detailed configurations of the keyboard, which of course vary a lot with user preference and typical use case. It is very difficult, if even possible at all, to reach consensus on a defined layout only basing on the initial poll.
We could use a set of few and simpler polls in order to reach a crowd-developed decision (pure Eve-ness style). I think a logic procedure could be polling about general decisions first, and then proceed with more fine-tuning polls.
Finally, one more element will be needed to determine the Fn layer, which is the exact number of fn spots we effectively have: I count 12 F1-F12 keys + 4 ARROW keys, however @iKirin mentioned 3 hardware related fn keys that would already use some of the available spots. We will need to know how many of these, if any, are a fixed choice and not ours to decide (the only alternative to the physical keys would be a dedicated Eve software utility to control, I guess?)
I don't know if @iKirin and other Team members think this kind of polling is desirable or timely right now, so I will not open a new thread or create the polls myself, but I will just suggest a couple of polls that could already reduce the huge variety of proposals for fn layer layout. I hope these can help.
1. Do you want the Eve-V keyboard to have the Home / End/Page Up / Page Down group of fn keys? (they will use 4 available fn spots out of ???)
- Yes, they are essential
- No, I can live without them
(Self explanatory. Also very easy answer for me: Yes, they are essential. I think at least some people did not vote them in the initial poll because they gave it for granted these keys will be placed on the arrow keys, and initially it appeared we were only discussing the upper Fn line... I mean, they only have low 50% preferences on the general poll and they trail Play/Pause Audio! This is, ehm... interesting?)
If poll n.1 has a Yes majority, and I strongly hope it will, then:
2. Where would you like the the Home / End/Page Up / Page Down group of fn keys be placed on the Eve-V keyboard?
- On the ARROW keys
- On the F1-F12 line
- I don't have a preference as long as they are there
This will be more interesting. If asked 2 days ago I would have been 100% "On ARROW keys" because I thought it was the most logic option. But then @Filippo_Possenti and @nawthor suggested/reported of brightness and volume controls on the ARROW keys. This solution makes the "working keys" perhaps a little less quick to access on the Fn line, but I am amazed on how intuitive volume and brightness on the arrows would be... I am surprised it is not more common. Now I would be a bit undecided between the two solutions... I would like to hear more opinions about this and then decide.
With the result of just these 2 polls we would already able to limit the spread of the proposals and concentrate on further decisions about the Fn layer.
